Higgins Bakery
Higgins Bakery has been baking bread for Shepparton and the Goulburn Valley since 1947. Third-generation Mathew Higgins can be found on the road across the Goulburn Valley from Shepp to Seymour, delivering bread and pastries to cafes and restaurants.
A decade back, he added sourdough bread to the repertoire, baking beautifully formed loaves with a crisp crust and light, flavoursome crumb using organic wheat, spelt and rye flours. He also perfected the difficult art of the ciabatta using very wet, slow-fermented dough to produce light and flavoursome rolls that are used around the valley.
Pie lovers cross the state to buy Higgins pies made to a 75-year-old recipe developed by Matthew’s grandfather. Higgins sausage rolls are also contenders for best in show. Customers can pay one forward too, so Higgins can help feed people in need with their baked goods.
