Longleat Wines
Down by the banks of the Goulburn, near the end of a quiet no-through road, is a vineyard and winery with a dining room and outdoor area to taste wine and enjoy plates of house-made food.
Murchison Wines is the home of Sandra and Guido Vazzoler, whose winemaking and cooking skills match their natural, easy-going hospitality. This is a place to come; slow down, and enjoy the estate wines at a leisurely pace.
The new dining room is a light and airy barn-like space with polished floorboards, an open fireplace made from found bricks, and a beautiful mosaic installation of La Zingara by Rushworth artist Angie Russi.
Each Friday, Guido makes pasta, and Sandra makes sauces with seasonal produce. In spring, it could be asparagus and white anchovies, while later in the season, it could be roasted cherry tomatoes with a dash of cream.
Cheese platters under vines are popular, and Sandra always bakes a cake, perhaps a dense and delicious Sicilian apple cake. Meanwhile, the Goulburn silently glides past the vineyard, the river red gums forming a green and silver backdrop to the ever-changing vista of the vines.
